An Oregon born fiction writer, Cates currently resides in Corvallis Oregon writing away her early mornings six-days a week. Inspired to help other writers of long-form fiction, Cates founded Townsend Literary Journal in March of 2018. Townsend,  strives to  publish high-quality novel excerpts by authors who flourish  under long-form writing.
